Description
Tiny Size. Powerful Smart Control.
Add reliable smart control to lights, appliances and other electrical equipment with the Shelly 1 Mini Gen3 an ultra-compact Wi-Fi smart relay with a dry (potential-free) contact output.
Measuring just 29 × 34 × 16 mm, the Shelly 1 Mini Gen3 is designed for installations where space is limited. It can fit discreetly behind wall switches, sockets and other electrical equipment while providing remote control, local automation and flexible integration with popular smart-home platforms.
Its potential-free relay contact is particularly useful because the switched circuit can be electrically separated from the power supply used by the Shelly itself. This makes the Shelly 1 Mini Gen3 suitable for a wide range of applications, including lighting, small appliances, contactors, doorbells, access-control equipment and other low-voltage control systems.
Key Features & Benefits
🔌 Dry Contact / Potential-Free Relay
The Shelly 1 Mini Gen3 features a potential-free (dry) relay contact, allowing the output to switch a circuit independently of the voltage powering the Shelly.
This makes it considerably more versatile than a conventional smart relay and opens up applications such as:
- Lighting circuits
- Small appliances
- Contactors
- Garage and gate controllers
- Doorbells
- Irrigation systems
- Low-voltage equipment
- Control inputs on larger electrical systems
Always check the voltage and current rating of the particular load before installation.
📦 Ultra-Compact Design
One of the biggest advantages of the Shelly 1 Mini Gen3 is its extremely small footprint.
At only 29 × 34 × 16 mm, it can be installed in locations where conventional smart relays simply won’t fit.
It’s ideal for:
- Behind existing wall switches
- Inside wall boxes
- Behind sockets
- Inside light fittings
- Electrical enclosures
- Compact automation projects
The small form factor makes it particularly well suited to smart-home retrofits, where replacing the existing switch or adding additional wiring isn’t desirable.
📶 Wi-Fi Connectivity – No Hub Required
Connect the Shelly 1 Mini Gen3 directly to your 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network without requiring a dedicated hub or gateway.
Control your devices using the Shelly Smart Control app, local web interface or compatible third-party platforms.
The device can also operate locally, making it an excellent choice for users who prefer smart-home systems that don’t depend entirely on cloud services.
🏠 Excellent Home Assistant Compatibility
The Shelly 1 Mini Gen3 integrates well with popular home automation platforms, including Home Assistant.
Use it to create automations such as:
Turn on a light when a door opens.
Activate a contactor when a temperature threshold is reached.
Switch an appliance off automatically after a set period.
Control a gate or garage door from a central automation system.
Its local-control capabilities make it particularly attractive for advanced DIY smart-home installations.
📡 Bluetooth Gateway & Wi-Fi Range Extender
Bluetooth connectivity makes device setup quick and convenient while also allowing the Shelly 1 Mini Gen3 to function as a Bluetooth gateway for compatible Shelly BLU devices.
The device can also operate as a Wi-Fi range extender, helping improve connectivity within suitable installations.
⚙️ Powerful Gen3 Hardware
Despite its tiny dimensions, the Shelly 1 Mini Gen3 uses Shelly’s Gen3 hardware platform, including the ESP-Shelly-C38F processor and 8 MB flash memory.
This provides the processing power required for advanced automation functions, scripting and local integrations.
🤖 Advanced Automation
The Shelly 1 Mini Gen3 isn’t limited to simple on/off control.
Create sophisticated automations using:
- Schedules
- Scenes
- Timers
- Local actions
- Sunrise/sunset triggers
- Webhooks
- MQTT
- mJS scripting
- UDP
- Virtual components
- HTTP/HTTPS integrations
This makes the device suitable for everything from a simple smart light to more advanced DIY automation and building-control projects.
🛡️ Built-In Temperature Protection
An internal temperature sensor monitors the device during operation and provides overheating protection, helping protect the relay during demanding installations.
External circuit protection should still be provided in accordance with the electrical installation requirements and the connected load.
What Can You Use the Shelly 1 Mini Gen3 For?
The compact design and dry-contact output make this Shelly particularly versatile.
💡 Smart Lighting
Turn conventional lights into smart lights while retaining local automation and remote control.
🚪 Gates & Garage Doors
Use the dry contact to interface with compatible gate or garage-door controllers.
🔔 Doorbells & Access Control
Trigger compatible low-voltage control inputs without directly switching the controlled device’s power supply.
⚡ Contactors
Use the Shelly to control a suitably rated contactor when the ultimate load exceeds the Shelly’s own relay rating.
🌱 Irrigation
Integrate suitable irrigation controllers, valves or contactors into a wider smart-home automation system.
🏠 DIY Smart Home Projects
Its tiny size, dry contacts, Wi-Fi connectivity and extensive automation support make it an excellent building block for custom smart-home projects.
Shelly 1 Mini Gen3 vs a Conventional Smart Relay
The dry-contact output is one of the most important distinctions.
A conventional smart relay often switches the same electrical supply that powers the device. The Shelly 1 Mini Gen3 instead provides a potential-free relay contact, allowing considerably more flexibility when interfacing with external equipment.
This makes it particularly useful when the Shelly is being used as a control signal rather than simply as a mains switch.

Important Installation Information
The Shelly 1 Mini Gen3 requires a neutral connection for its own power supply. The relay output is potential-free, so the switched circuit can be different from the voltage supplying the Shelly, provided the installation remains within the device’s electrical ratings.
The relay is rated for 8A at 240V AC or 5A at 30V DC. For higher-power loads, the Shelly can be used to control an appropriately rated contactor rather than switching the load directly.
Mains electrical work should always be performed by a suitably qualified electrician and in accordance with local electrical regulations.
Why Choose the Shelly 1 Mini Gen3?
The Shelly 1 Mini Gen3 is an excellent choice when you need a small, reliable and flexible smart relay but don’t need energy monitoring or a multi-channel device.
Its combination of 8A dry-contact switching, Wi-Fi connectivity, Bluetooth, local control, advanced automation and an exceptionally small form factor makes it particularly useful for smart-home retrofits and custom automation projects.
Small enough to install almost anywhere. Flexible enough to automate almost anything.
